It’s like really getting to know someone, not just making their acquaintance. Marla Baggetta Sketches are the foundation for many finished pieces, and they are also often part of the process of finding my way to a finished piece. Marla Baggetta has been a professional working artist for twenty-five years. She’s a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and a Master Circle recipient in the International Association of Pastel Societies. Her award-winning work has been exhibited in galleries and juried shows nationally.
I guess that you could say my sketches are inspired by my ability to create a scenario as I want it rather than accepting it the way that it exists. I don’t sketch daily, but I do sketch often. I even keep a small sketch pad in my van for those times when I am on the road and see a potential subject for a painting. I probably do about ten to twenty small thumbnail sketches a week. They only take a few minutes and are full of useful information. I like to look through my photographs and then do several three to five minute sketches of a subject with minor changes in each.
Now I use sketching more for information-gathering, but this is still very useful in my creative process. The more information I have, the more creative I can be when I do the work. If I’m sketching ideas for a picture, I’m thinking ahead to color and design possibilities. I’m project-oriented and focused. If I’m doodling, my mind is a blank. It’s almost like meditating—very relaxing. I really enjoy the process when I’m not thinking of the sketch as a finished product. Sometimes I drift into a playful mood that generates a more creative direction than my original intention.
