Local Aboriginals were then frequently employed on fishing vessels from Thursday Island, but conditions were so appalling that (after 1901) the missions discouraged this. Mapoon residents were primarily of mixed descent, and a mission operated there until 1963 when administration was transferred to the (now) Department of Aboriginal and Islander Affairs (DAIA). The Presbyterian Church considered that the site was inadequate, due to poor soil, lack of adequate water supply and difficult communications.
